Important Safety Information

GLP-1 Treatment: Semaglutide and Tirzepatide

Covers the GLP-1 Shot (semaglutide), the GLP-1 + GIP Shot (tirzepatide) and the GLP-1 Pill (tirzepatide orally dissolving tablet).

Read this information before you start treatment and each time you refill. It does not replace a conversation with your Axiom Medical Professional.

Boxed Warning: Risk of Thyroid C-Cell Tumors

In studies with rodents, semaglutide and tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors, including cancer. It is not known if these medications cause thyroid tumors or a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in people.

Do not use semaglutide or tirzepatide if you or any of your family have ever had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Tell your Axiom Medical Professional right away if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath.

Do not use if you

  • Have a personal or family history of MTC, or have MEN 2
  • Have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide, tirzepatide or any ingredient in the medication

Serious side effects

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Stop treatment and get medical help right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area that will not go away, with or without vomiting. The pain may spread to your back.
  • Gallbladder problems. Symptoms may include pain in your upper stomach, fever, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools.
  • Low blood sugar. Your risk is higher if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Signs include dizziness, shakiness, sweating, confusion, fast heartbeat, hunger and feeling jittery.
  • Kidney problems. Vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration, which may lead to kidney problems. Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Severe stomach problems. These medications are not recommended for people with severe stomach or bowel problems, including slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis).
  • Serious allergic reactions. Get medical help right away if you have swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, severe rash or itching, fainting, or a very fast heartbeat.
  • Changes in vision. Tell your Axiom Medical Professional about any change in your vision, especially if you have type 2 diabetes.
  • Increased heart rate. Tell your Axiom Medical Professional if you feel your heart racing or pounding while at rest.
  • Depression or thoughts of suicide. Pay attention to changes in your mood, behavior, thoughts or feelings. Call your Axiom Medical Professional right away if you have new or worse depression or thoughts of hurting yourself. In a crisis, call or text 988.
  • Food or liquid in your lungs during surgery. Tell all of your healthcare providers that you take a GLP-1 medication before any surgery or procedure that uses anesthesia or deep sleep.

GLP-1 Pill (tirzepatide ODT)

The GLP-1 Pill contains tirzepatide in a tablet that dissolves in your mouth. It carries the same Boxed Warning, the same reasons not to use it and the same serious side effects as tirzepatide injection. Take it exactly as your Axiom Medical Professional directs. Do not take more than 1 tablet a day unless you are told to.

Common side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, heartburn, headache, tiredness, dizziness, bloating, belching, gas, injection site reactions (shots) and hair loss. These are not all of the possible side effects. Side effects are most common when you start or increase your dose.

Before you start, tell your Axiom Medical Professional if you

  • Have or have had problems with your pancreas, kidneys, liver or gallbladder
  • Have severe stomach problems, or trouble digesting food
  • Have type 2 diabetes or a history of diabetic retinopathy
  • Have or have had depression or thoughts of suicide
  • Are scheduled for surgery or a procedure that uses anesthesia
  • Take any other medications, including insulin, sulfonylureas or another GLP-1 medication

Pregnancy and birth control

Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. These medications may harm an unborn baby. Stop semaglutide at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.

Tirzepatide may make birth control pills less effective. If you use birth control pills, switch to a non-oral method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks after you start tirzepatide and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
